Fit guide / 02

Fit is a set of checks, not a label.

Sizing varies between garments and brands. Use this repeatable checklist to evaluate a piece in context instead of relying on the size printed on a tag.

A five-minute fitting checklist

  1. Shoulders: on a structured jacket, check where the shoulder seam falls and whether it pulls across the back.
  2. Reach: extend your arms, type at a desk and reach forward. Notice tension across the upper back or sleeve.
  3. Sit: sit normally and check waistband pressure, hem movement and whether closures gape.
  4. Walk: take a few steps and check stride, fabric cling and whether hems catch.
  5. Layer: test the garment with the shirt, knit or jacket you expect to wear underneath or over it.

Fabric: what to compare

Composition. Read the fibre percentages on the actual label. Different fibres can affect feel and care, but composition alone does not guarantee durability or comfort.

Weave and weight. Hold the garment against the light if opacity matters, and check how it hangs. A heavier cloth may drape differently but is not automatically better.

Stretch and recovery. If a fabric contains elastane or has mechanical stretch, check how it feels through movement and whether it returns to shape after being gently extended.

Care requirements. Compare the instructions with the time, equipment and cost you are willing to spend on garment care.

Quick comparison worksheet

When comparing two real garments, record the same information for both. Leave a field unknown until the label or seller confirms it.

Garment A / Garment B
Fibre composition · care method · lining · stretch · pockets · fit through shoulders/waist · seated comfort · alterations needed · verified price.

Fit and inclusion

There is no single correct office silhouette. Comfort, mobility, personal preference, cultural context and workplace expectations differ. Treat these checks as prompts, not rules about what someone should wear.

This guide is general information, not a guarantee that a garment will fit or perform in a particular way. Confirm actual measurements and product details with the seller.
